AMICI MIEI, SoHo

CAFE WHA?, Greenwich Village
Seems as if this Greenwich Village Club has been here since forever, or at least long enough for its stage to be graced by singers and comedians such as Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springstreen, Bob Dylan, Chaka Kahn, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Ray Romano (how about Ray's recent $2 million book advance?). Our guests bypass the lines, order a Woo Woo (Peach schnapps, vodka and strawberry), and settle in. Food's pretty good, but that's not the point. It's not unusual for our clients to greet the 4 a.m. cleaning crew.

CHEZ JOSEPHINE, Theater District
Jean-Claude Baker is one of the adopted sons of Josephine Baker, the famed American dancer who made her reputation in Paris. Jean Claude's is an elegant tribute to his mother: Large, framed posters of Josephine adorn the red brick walls, a jazz pianist entertains, and the kitchen serves up wonderful food. As if that weren't enough, the clientele is an eclectic blend of theater folks and theatergoers, all fans of Jean-Claude's warm hospitality.

CHINA GRILL, Midtown West
China Grill defines trendy in Midtown. The restaurant resides in "The Rock," as locals call the CBS building. The sleek lines of the building belie the whimsical décor that is both soothing to the soul and exciting to the eye. Once the evening begins to roll, the noise level mounts, as does the excitement of so many young overachievers lining up three deep at the bar. The food: An interesting mixture of Asian and American fare, with every so often a hint of Italy, all served family style.

COOKING WITH JAZZ, Queens
Chef-owner Michael Van Gelder and his son run this little "whole-in-the-wall" restaurant in a residential area of Queens. Off the tourist track, it serves up some of the finest Cajun food north of New Orleans (Steve worked with master chef Paul Prudhomme in New Orleans for four years). Live jazz on weekends and by special arrangement.

CRAB HOUSE, Chelsea Piers
A sprawling, informal restaurant with captivating views of the Hudson River.

DENIM & DIAMONDS, Lexington Avenue at 49th Street
A high energy bar / restaurant with a shot of country and a splash of rock'n'roll. Dress code is definitely casual jeans and T-shirts are the uniform. On Lexington Avenue between 48th and 49th Streets, D&D offers line dancing, dance lessons, and a down home menu:

In the heart of the meat packing district, an area where guests are unlikely to wander on their own, this little diner offers copious, good American breakfasts. Decor: Non-existent unless you count formica and linoleum among decorator's materials.

FIREBIRD, RESTAURANT ROW
A little corner of Mother Russia in Manhattan, where owner J. William Holt and his wife The Baroness Irina, granddaughter of the assassinated former Mayor of St. Petersburg have created a little corner of their homeland on West 46th Street. Complete with original Diaghilev ballet costume sketches, books form the Czar's personal library, Faberge eggs, and other priceless items, Firebird is a jewel box. The food is lovingly prepared, the service reminiscent of turn-of-the-century elegance; in short, a dining experience that transports to another time and place. A wonderful second-floor bar is the perfect setting for a pre-dinner drink, or a nightcap.

FOLEY'S, Times Square
Normally, we do not recommend hotel dining rooms. This is one of the few exceptions. Oversized wrap-around windows offer views of non-stop neon of Times Square. Latest edition: The over-sized Morgan-Stanley Stock Exchange ticker tape racing by outside.

KEENS CHOP HOUSE, Chelsea
In the late 1800's, an exclusive men's club in the former theatre district, now a popular destination for the nearby garment trade. Keens still has a clubby feel, with its dark wood panelled dining rooms and terra cotta smoking pipes that line the ceilings. Food cooked to perfection.

LA BOITE EN BOIS, Lincoln Centre Area
A minuscule (maximum 46 seats), charming, welcoming, excellent country French restaurant.

La CITE, Broadway-Radio City
An updated version of the New York steakhouse with Gallic pedigree. Near the Theater Distrct, Radio City Music Hall, and with an informal bistro section (which we prefer) and a more formal dining room, the prix fixe "Taste of the Grape" menu is excellent value.Small groups may dine a la carte.

LE BAR BAT, Midtown
Not just for dancing any more, this disco, with its dramatic blue draping and bats in a former church, looks like a set for a vampire movie waiting to be filmed. Lively at night, but available by day, the location at West 57th Street is the ideal departure point for individual exploration after lunch.

Breakfast or lunch in a replica of a plush 19th century railway dining car. Breakfast at Bloomingdale's is the perfect start to the day: Ordinary mortals can be seen on their daily commute stream across the 59th Street Bridge, while participants enjoy a leisurely full American breakfast, with champagne, and a fashion show or cosmetic demonstration. After breakfast, a chance to shop before the general public has access.

Formerly on West 46th Street, "Restaurant Row," the new digs are lovely and much more intimate, the way a jazz club should be. It's in the old home owned by the famous actor, John Barrymore. Barrymore's house was a also a restaurant for a while. The new place is done up in reds, and the original library, with its humongous fireplace, is still intact. Nightly jazz is the main event here. Some of the best progressive, rag, and Dixieland bands entertain.

SEQUOIA, South Street Seaport

A category apart, steakhouses in New York are a "must do" experience. Expect huge steaks in an informal masculine setting, with waiters of varying degrees of civility.

GALLAGHER'S, Theatre District
It started in the mid 1800's as a steakhouse without the niceties of knives and forks, later became a speak-easy, and today is a destination in the Theatre District. The front windows offer a view of the massive cooler, with its curing steaks hanging on hooks. The Broadway dining room offers a view of the sizzling kitchen.

KEENS STEAK HOUSE, Chelsea
Established in 1885, the restaurant is renowned for its steaks and the largest churchwarden pipe collection on earth. These Dutch clay pipes, formerly belonging to members of this men s club, line the ceilings. On the walls are museum quality theatre and political memorabilia from the era when the area was the centre of Manhattan cultural life. With the largest single malt Scotch collection in the U.S., a shot tasting is the perfect start to a meal featuring perfectly grilled steaks or lamb chops.

SMTH & WOLLENSKY, 49th Street and Third Avenue
You want noise? You want New York atmosphere? This is the place. Bright, brassy, and full of patrons eager to dig into gargantuan steaks.
Sample menu: Lobster cocktail, Steak, Creamed Spinach, Cottage Fries and Fried Zucchini (shared, because portions are enormous), Deep Dish Apple Pie with Ice Cream or White Chocolate Mousse with Raspberry Sauce. Price varies depending on cut of beef.

SPARKS, East 46th Street between Second and Third Avenues
A well kept secret among wine connoisseurs and serious steak and fish eaters who were not at all fazed by the big portions it serves, the place acquired legendary status when a major mob figure was gunned down in front of the restaurant. Cars with beefy drivers still line up every evening to await their bosses dining on the best dry-cured steaks in New York.

With Michael Jordan's, his steak house, MJ expands his reach into fine dining. Don't expect a theme restaurant with basketballs and hoops. Rather, the steak house is an understated burgundy, gold and wood model of serenity by architect David Rockwell, splendidly set in the newly renovated, and once again, very grand Grand Central Terminal. Sports icon meets historic landmark. And food that proves that you can have great steaks with a view.
